In a world obsessed with ascension, light, and rising above the body, the traditional Japanese practice of Reiki invites us to return to come home to the Earth, to the body, and to the quiet power that lives in the center of our being. That center is the Hara, and it is the embodiment of Earth Ki.
The Hara is located about two inches below the navel and several inches inward, but it is much more than a physical location. In Japanese energetic understanding, the Hara is our energetic center of gravity, our true core not just spiritually, but physically, emotionally, and energetically. The Hara isn’t just where Earth Ki is stored. The Hara is Earth Ki. It is the point in the human body where we are most connected to the Earth. It is the ground within us the place of stillness, stability, and vitality. When we breathe into the Hara, we awaken the Earth Ki that has always been there, waiting for us to return.
While many modern teachings emphasize hands, symbols, or chakras, traditional Japanese Reiki emphasizes the Hara as the foundation of all true healing work. Practicing from the Hara means we are grounded, present, and clear. We are not channeling Reiki as something “out there,” but allowing it to arise from the union of heaven and earth within us. Here's why the Hara is central in authentic Reiki practice:
The Hara is not something we have to imagine. It is already there. But in a culture that pulls us up into our heads and out into the virtual world, we must consciously return to it. Here are ways to restore your relationship with the Hara:
Place both hands on your lower belly. Breathe slowly into your hands not just in thought, but with your awareness and physical sensation. Let your breath sink. With each exhale, release tension and drop deeper into your center.
This foundational Reiki meditation involves inhaling through the nose into the Hara and exhaling gently through the skin. With each cycle, Earth Ki becomes more alive in your body, quieting the mind and strengthening presence.
During self-Reiki, always begin with your awareness in the Hara. Place one hand there, even if just for a moment, and breathe. Let this be your home base throughout the session.
In daily life, bring your awareness down into the Hara when walking, speaking, listening. Let it be your point of reference. The more you live from this center, the more grounded and true you become.
Reiki is not just about light. It is also about depth, weight, and presence. The Hara reminds us that our healing power is not something we chase in the sky it is something we embody from the Earth. When we practice Reiki from the Hara, we are no longer trying to “send energy” or “fix” anyone. We are simply resting in the ground of being. We become still. We become true. And from that stillness, Reiki arises naturally.
This is the heart of practice. This is Earth Ki. This is Hara. This is home.
