While the Hara is our anchor our ground, our inner mountain Heaven Ki is the expansive sky that surrounds and moves through us. If Earth Ki is the soil of presence, then Heaven Ki is the light of awareness. For Reiki practitioners seeking balance and depth, it’s not enough to be grounded we must also be open. And that opening happens when we attune ourselves to Heaven Ki, the subtle, luminous current of energy that uplifts and clarifies without force.
In traditional Japanese energetic philosophy, Ki refers to life force the breath, the vibration, the pulse that animates all of life. While Earth Ki lives in the lower body and grounds us, Heaven Ki flows from the upper realms of being subtle, clear, expansive, and light. Heaven Ki is not “higher” in a hierarchical way it’s simply another expression of the life force. Where Earth Ki stabilizes, Heaven Ki inspires. It connects us to our intuition, clarity, and sense of oneness with the unseen. It moves through the upper body the heart, throat, and head but it is not mental. It is awareness, connection, and a felt sense of inner light. Heaven Ki cannot be summoned with effort. It arises when we soften. It flows when we listen.
In Reiki, we are not just channeling energy we are remembering what it is to be in harmony with life itself. That harmony arises from the balanced flow of Earth Ki and Heaven Ki. When a practitioner is connected to Heaven Ki, they are able to offer healing presence that is intuitive, spacious, and deeply resonant. Here’s how Heaven Ki enriches Reiki practice:
Just as we ground into Earth Ki through the Hara, we open to Heaven Ki by softening the upper body especially the heart, throat, and areas above and entering into quiet receptivity. It is not about visualizing energy coming “down from above,” but about creating spaciousness within for what is already present to move freely. Here are foundational practices to awaken Heaven Ki:
Begin in Gasshō (palms together at the heart), then raise your hands to the third eye and slowly open them, as if revealing a hidden light. This invites Heaven Ki to flow through and into the hands. Let yourself be guided, not by thought, but by sensation and awareness.
With your spine aligned, imagine your breath gently entering through the upper area of your head like a mist or light breeze. As you exhale, let the breath flow through your heart and down into your body. Don’t force anything just receive.
Sit quietly with your spine upright and your awareness gently focused on the space above your head or within your upper chest. Let your mind rest. In the stillness, Heaven Ki begins to flow not because you make it happen, but because you stop resisting its natural presence.
Heaven Ki isn’t just something we activate during Reiki sessions it’s a quality of consciousness we can embody in daily life.
When Heaven Ki is alive in us, we feel connected to something larger than ourselves. Life becomes a little lighter, more easeful. We are no longer trying to control the flow we are simply participating in it.
While the Hara roots us to the Earth, Heaven Ki reminds us that we are also light. That we are part of a larger rhythm, a vast intelligence, and an eternal stillness. Heaven Ki flows not when we reach, but when we open. Not when we push, but when we trust. In Reiki, we are not creating energy we are allowing it to be felt, to be known, and to be shared.
This is Heaven Ki.
